Too many facades?

In almost all books of fantasy I have read, I have noticed that; be it the Patronus of HP or the True Name concept of Earthsea and Alagaesia; most of these works have in common: the feature of a particular characteristic or property which tells one about the TRUE nature of a person, and which is something almost constant and undeniable. Is this a hint of what people feel about today's society? Are there too many facades? Fantasy is what we desire of reality....so are we as people in need of something similar? Something that tells us about the 'inner nature' of a person shattering the veneers we proudly display and hide behind? What if we get our wish? Will we be able to face what we are? Embrace what we are?
